Nehanda is a significant figure in Zimbabwean history and is often referred to as Mbuya Nehanda, meaning "Grandmother Nehanda." She was a spiritual leader and medium of the Shona people, who played a crucial role in the resistance against British colonial rule in the late 19th century.
Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana, commonly known as Mbuya Nehanda, was born in the 1860s in the northern region of present-day Zimbabwe. She belonged to the Zezuru branch of the Shona ethnic group and became a powerful svikiro (spirit medium) within her community. As a svikiro, Nehanda was believed to have the ability to communicate with the ancestral spirits and serve as a mediator between the spirit world and the living. In 1896, Nehanda played a pivotal role in the First Chimurenga, also known as the First Chimurenga War or the Zimbabwean-British War. She rallied the Shona and Ndebele people against the colonial forces, advocating for unity and liberation. Nehanda's spiritual influence and leadership skills made her a symbol of resistance and inspired many to join the fight for independence. However, in 1897, Nehanda was captured by the British and subsequently executed. Her trial and execution remain controversial, with some viewing her as a national hero and martyr, while others consider her a rebel and criminal.
